Green Bay Voyageurs have announced the signing of a Anthony Markanich, a freshman and 2nd Team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honoree from Northern Illinois University.
Markanich, a 6-foot-1 defender, is the twin brother of fellow Husky Nick Markanich, who was the first-ever player signed by the Voyageurs.
Anthony Markanich tarted in all 18 games of the Northern Illinois Huskies’ season. During the season, he scored 4 goals, tallied 7 assists, and provided a strong defensive presence for the team.
Prior to attending NIU, Markanich, a native of Bourbonnais, Illinois, had a stellar club and high school career. At Bradley-Bourbonnais High School, Markanich scored 40 goals and had 14 assists as a senior, helping the Boilermakers to a third-place finish in the Illinois 3A State Tournament while also earning all-state honors. In 2016, Markanich led Bradley-Bourbonnais to a third-place state finish. On the club side, he spent time with Chicago Fire Academy and won the US Club Soccer U19 Super Group National Championship with Olympiacos Chicago in 2018.
“I’m happy to be able to play and be a part of this new team. I’m excited to get started,” Markanich said in a statement.
Voyageurs Head Coach Brian Kamler thinks Anthony will be an asset to the team. “Anthony is a two-way player out of the back, and we are excited to see his creativity and passing out of the back as well as how he will shut down other teams’ attacks on the right side,” said Kamler.
