Madison police on Friday concluded their investigation into a February 13 incident in which the Whitehorse Middle School Dean of Students allegedly assaulted an 11-year-old Black sixth grader and referred their report to the Distict Attorney’s office. Details of the report have not been released, bud Madison365 has requested case records.

Security video shows a portion of the incident, which began in a classroom and spilled into the hallway, and resulted in the girl receiving a bloody lip and having three braids ripped from her scalp. The security video has not been released pending the conclusion of the police investigation, but will be released soon, school district officials said.

The incident drew national attention and sparked outrage among community members who passionately demanded the school board do more to protect Black children.

Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham also issued an open letter to the community, pledging more aggressive measures to combat racism in the schools.
