Maiyoua Thao narrowly defeated John Cuff to earn a place on the Appleton Common Council, representing the city’s North Side.
She will be the first Hmong woman to serve on the council.
“(District 7 residents) have been very thankful to me for doing this for the community,” she said after finishing atop the primary election on February 19. “They have seen me as the first Hmong woman to take the initiative to have the interest to do this. They are very thankful. They are very proud of my credentials and things I have done for the community in the past.”
