Presidential Historian: Trump has “joined Andrew Johnson as the most racist president in American history”

For the past few days, President Donald Trump has been involved in a controversy after telling four freshman House lawmakers – Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) –  they should, among other things, “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham (see below) said Monday that President Trump’s latest attacks against on the congresswomen of color – all four U.S. citizens, three of whom were born in America – put him among very infamous company in United States history.

“What the president has done here is yet again — I because I think he did it after Charlottesville, and I think he did it, frankly, when he was pushing the birther lie about President Obama — is he has joined Andrew Johnson as the most racist president in American history,”  Meacham said on MSNBC’s “Hardball.”

Meacham addressed the legacy of both parties using race to appeal to white voters in United States politics.

“When people say, ‘This isn’t who we are.’ That’s not true. It is who we are,” he said. “It’s pointless to try and expiate ourselves from what Trump has been saying. There has been national complicity in this.”

White nationalists on social media were very happy with Trump’s latest remarks. Neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin, posting on his popular Daily Stormer website, said, “Man, President Trump’s Twitter account has been pure fire lately. This might be the funniest thing he’s ever tweeted. This is the kind of WHITE NATIONALISM we elected him for.”
